How About Just Yelling 'Anyone Lost Anything?' Is That Reasonable Effort?
-
The old "if you found $1,000 on the street, would you try to return it?" topic is a talk radio evergreen when there's nothing else to talk about. But what's the actual law about this? You might assume it's Finders Keepers, but in some places, like Californian, you're legally bound to make a reasonable effort to find the owner, which means that even if you find a QUARTER, you're supposed to place an ad in a paper or something like that to show that you tried. That seems ridiculous when the effort would cost you more than the money you found, but that's the law. You wouldn't, of course, do that for a quarter, or a dollar. How about twenty bucks? No? Fifty? A hundred? What's the cutoff? (San Francisco Chronicle)
