Good Thing The Free Road's Still Free
-
Whenever they build a toll road, they promise that as soon as the initial bonds are paid off, the tolls will come down. Occasionally, that happens. Usually, it's a lie. The New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway, 50 years ago, quietly just issued new bonds and kept the tolls in order to perpetuate the cash cow that allows both political parties to stash their hacks in patronage jobs there. And here it is again: Orange County's San Joaquin Hills Toll Road was supposed to be paid off in 2036. and the tolls dismantled. But they decided to get a loan modification -- ! -- that extends it to 2042, and they'll surely extend it again so that nobody driving on that road now will ever see it be free. It's just the way it always works. (Orange County Register)
