And Once You're In, It's Nearly Impossible To Get Fired
-
If you want a taste of why some states are in the financial mess they're in, check out this column which explains better than I could how California has been taken for a ride by the prison guards' union. See how you can make big salaries, take early retirement at 85% of your final year's salary FOR LIFE, continue to get medical benefits FOR LIFE, and get a ton of vacation and be able to bank it and redeem it for cash when you retire. And for anyone who says "well, it's a tough job," see how thousands of people are willing to do it, and ask how many are hurt or killed on the job as opposed to lesser-paid dangerous jobs. And the corrections department even advertises the job as the "greatest entry-level job in California" and more lucrative than jobs awaiting people with Harvard degrees. You even get paid to train. They're robbing the taxpayers in broad daylight, with the governor and legislature's complicity. And if you think your state's any better, you just aren't looking hard enough. (Wall Street Journal)
