By 1950, They Knew Better
-
I think we reported on this before, at least when it was first discovered, but now there's a plan to replace some controversial grave markets at a cemetery in California where the bodies of dead African-Americans had been relocated in 1950 from another spot cleared to build a dam. The original site was known, at least by 1950, as "Negro Hill." The markers, placed there by the Army Corps of Engineers, again, in 1950, say that the bodies were moved from "N-word Hill." Except they don't say "N-word," they use the actual word. The California Prison Industry Authority is offering to change the markers, which are near their offices, because nobody else is doing it. Naturally, there's red tape. How hard can this be to fix? What possible red tape can there be in popping the stones out and dropping new ones in? (CNN)
