How Much Is That Bacon Double Cheeseburger Worth To You?

I didn't know that Arizona, at least according to this BBC report, is proposing fining fat people on Medicaid for not dieting if their doctors prescribe a plan. The war on the obese -- it's not on obesity -- is all about money and health care costs. The assumption is that forcing the obese to lose weight will improve their health and reduce costs, which is not necessarily a given, but they may be right. And, surely, not wanting the taxpayers to pay for low-income health care for people who eat and smoke their way into illness is understandable. But this smacks of punishing people for a situation it'll be hard for them to escape. Better to do things like make more junk food ineligible for food stamps. (BBC)
