Some people in the newspaper industry have called for the government to "bail out" journalism, and that's seen by a lot of people as dangerous, because the papers would then be beholden to the very government they're supposed to be covering. But it's not theory anymore, it's here: The state of New Hampshire is guaranteeing a loan to a newspaper, with taxpayers on the hook if there's a default. I'm sure the paper will be super-diligent in covering the people who voted for that loan guarantee. Thanks to Jeff Katz at WFTL/Ft. Lauderdale-West Palm Beach for the link.
