The Fire's Out Of Control - Give The Firemen More Money
-
The ridiculous thing about the New Jersey Supreme Court ruling that orders the state to add $500 million this year for schools is that it's based on a faulty assumption, that pouring money into schools means better education. I can say, as the son of a former New Jersey educator and union president, that the money will not go towards actual education. It will also not go towards fixing up the facilities or buying textbooks. It will pay for salaries at a time when the state can't afford it. It's all based on a legal case from 1985, Abbott v. Burke, that mandated that the state constitutional standard of a "thorough and efficient education" be offered in poor districts by taking state tax money and throwing it at the problem. It's vague and wide open and exactly the kind of thing that the union loves, because they can go to court and demand more spending, and the court always acquiesces. Meanwhile, the kids really don't get a better education, but that apparently doesn't matter. (New York Times)
