Making Philly Fans Look Better And Better By Comparison Every Day
-
North Americans take sports seriously, but even the Vancouver riots pale compared to... well, take Argentina, where the fabled River Plate soccer club got relegated to the second division and fans rioted inside and outside the stadium. Unlike the Vancouver riot, which appeared to use the hockey game as an excuse rather than a direct reason for the violence, this one was the reaction of fans to an embarrassing loss. "It's only a game" doesn't seem to register with some people. But when a team's fans are known by a name that translates into "The Drunks in the Stands," I suppose this kind of thing might be predictable. (Chicago Tribune)
