Give Your Phone And Computer Away And See How You Fare
-
This snarky New York Post opinion piece pillories the idea, promulgated through programs like Pennsylvania's cell phones-for-the-poor and Chicago's WiFi in poor neighborhoods, that cell phones and the Internet are civil rights. And I guess I'm supposed to think that's a waste of money and an embarrassment. But, you know, business, jobs, and you could say even everyday life are now largely online. Not being online makes getting jobs or getting an education or being informed nearly impossible. Think about how many times you're now told that the information you need or the forms you have to fill out are online only. If it's not a "civil right," it's still a necessity, and other countries are treating it as such. Is it that far-fetched that Internet and wireless access be universal?
