Those Umbrella Hats Don't Cover Enough
-
Hollywood, Florida is looking into a ban on beach umbrellas by the shoreline. Wait, what? Well, it's two-fold: for one thing, the umbrellas could block lifeguards from running into the water. And for another, and this is really why they're doing it, people are complaining that the umbrellas block their view of the ocean and that "tent parties" by the water's edge are getting rowdy and out of hand. So, fine: ban everything directly in front of the lifeguard stands, and ban big tents from the water's edge. But you can't ban beach umbrellas from the waterline, can you? For some fair-skinned people -- I'm one of them -- we can't sit on the beach without an umbrella or tent for protection. Leave us be. (South Florida Sun-Sentinel)
