Safety In Blandness

Here's another unfair thing about the job market: a study in Canada indicates that people with English-sounding names have an edge over people with ethnic-sounding names for jobs. If this is true, and there's no reason to believe it isn't, what can you do about it? You can never prove that the people doing the hiring made the decision based on ethnicity, but you know it happens. And it's happened as long as people have been competing for jobs. If the name sounds too black, or Spanish, or Jewish, or any other ethnicity, you know that somebody making a decision to hire probably, subconsciously or not, picks the person with the "inoffensive" name.
