There's Always A Free Alternative

Okay, I still don't get it. Newspapers are still looking at tablets as saviors, and are charging for the use of their apps in an attempt to replace lost subscription revenue from the print versions. They've done that for some smartphone apps, too. But why would anyone pay for the app when the same exact content is available on their websites, free? I'll pay for the New York Times because the content isn't free after a certain number of stories (I know, there are ways around it through Google searching, but it's easier to pay), but I won't pay for, say, the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News through its app when I can get the content at philly.com for free. And if they put it all behind a paywall, I'll do without. How will tablets change this? (Los Angeles Times)
