What They Never Mention On The Food Network
-
We know that, as this article indicates, many natural foods, like fruits (and especially fruits with lots of dimples or pits like strawberries), can carry bacteria and cause E. coli. But you can also get it from the State Fair, which is considered the likely source of an outbreak in North Carolina. Combine food trucks and booths of questionable hygiene and petting zoos and barns full of animals and, yeah, E. coli isn't a surprise. But another source, which is suspected in an E. coli outbreak in the St, Louis area, is the supermarket salad bar. I'll tell you this: Once I saw people stick their hands in the salad bar at my local Ralphs to grab snacks without paying, I stopped even looking at the salad bar. I wouldn't eat that stuff for anything. (Seattle Times; WTVD/Raleigh-Durham; St. Louis Post-Dispatch)
