You're Addicted. You'll Pay Whatever They Want
-
How carefully do you watch what you pay for things? Even the most eagle-eyed consumer wouldn't have noticed that in Massachusetts, Starbucks was charging a secret fee, adding a $1.50 surcharge to bags of coffee weighing less than a pound, and they weren't putting that charge on the receipt. They just rounded the total price up, meaning that if you bought less than a pound, you paid a higher amount per ounce than you thought you were. the state has fined Starbucks for the practice. They were doing it nationwide, and justified the practice by saying that it went to cover labor and packaging costs. They don't do it anymore, or at least they say they don't. (WCVB–TV/Boston)
