Call It Anti-Marketing
-
Elvis Costello is taking an interesting position on his latest release, a $200 boxed CD/DVD set based on his "Spectacular Spinning Songbook" concert gimmick: He's telling fans to pirate it and spend the money on the Louis Armstrong boxed set instead. It's his little protest of his label's marketing and pricing system; he calls the price "either a misprint or a satire," and says he tried to get the label to reduce the price but failed. So he suggests spending the money on the Satchmo set, waiting for a lower-priced release of the Spinning Songbook material, or, in the headline of his blog post, "Steal This Record." At least he's putting his earnings where his mouth is. (Vancouver Sun)
