There Goes The Neighborhood. No, Really

The flow of lava from a volcano down the southern slopes of the Big Island of Hawaii took out an entire subdivision of homes over the years, but one guy stubbornly held out, even after lava destroyed the last two homes nearby in 2010-11. But, finally, the lava destroyed his home, and he got out via helicopter an hour before the lava burned the place up. (The aerial view from Google Maps from before the final destruction is amazing -- his little square roof is the only home left for miles, and brown trails of crusted-over lava streak the area) I understand why people wouldn't want to abandon their homes, but when there's lava all over the place, and you're next, how can you stay? Wouldn't you want to save yourself and your stuff before it was too late? (Hawaii Tribune-Herald, Hilo)
