At Least The Autopilot Won't Go Nuts Like That Guy Did
-
It's interesting that just the day before the JetBlue pilot's epic meltdown, this article ran at CNN.com about how autopilots work. Pilots say that it's a misconception that the computers fly the planes and the humans are only there in case something goes wrong, although once the plane's cruising, the autopilot does take over. And there's a danger that some pilots may rely too much on the autopilot to the extent that they don't keep sharp with their piloting skills, with possibly disastrous results. Some, including the CEO of Boeing, think that it's just a matter of time before we have pilotless airplanes. Would you want to fly in what amounts to a commercial drone?
