'It's Our Policy' Does NOT Mean 'We Can't.' It Means 'We Don't Wanna'

It's become a big Internet furor that this dying vet can't get a refund for his ticket from Spirit Airlines after finding out that he has terminal cancer and can't fly anymore. The airline insists that it can't refund the ticket because their policy is clearly no-refunds, and that it would be "unfair" to others and would drive up fares if they gave a refund to someone just because he's dying. Yeah, that does come off as callous. And I'd be more sympathetic to the company's position if that "policy" was a law, but it isn't. All corporate policies, whether grounded in necessity or not, can easily be bent or disregarded. Common sense should prevail. If they'd have just quietly given him a refund in the first place, none of this would be happening. (Tampa Tribune)
