Rep. Fortney "Pete" Stark (D-CA) is a long-standing member of Congress, beloved by those on the far left as a reliable liberal on practically every issue. But he's also known for being... weird. And not in a good way. And a little... off. Take his latest adventures, in which he's been lobbing demonstrably false allegations against enemies like his Democratic primary opponent and a conservative columnist at the San Francisco Chronicle (yes, they have one). Stark first announced that his challenger took "hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes," but after he couldn't produce any evidence, he was forced to publicly apologize. Then, he insisted that the columnist had donated to his challenger's campaign, which she denied and which would have shown up in the FEC donation records; when he couldn't find her there, he picked another name and said that that person worked for the paper and had donated to his opponent, only to find that the person he picked does not work for the Chronicle. He's 80 years old; maybe it's time to call it a career, because it's not going well. (San Francisco Chronicle)
