While Gawker's been a little, shall we say, uneven lately, its sister sports site Deadspin has been on a roll, and this article about the death of the Seattle Supersonics by someone who worked with the team in its final years is essential reading for anyone who has ever thought that public funds should build arenas for pro teams. The part where Wally Walker admits that a new arena, paid for by average people, will not do anything for those same people but is instead meant to coddle the rich folks who buy courtside seats and luxury boxes boils the whole equation down to the essential: You're subsidizing entertainment for someone else, and your loyalty means nothing to the teams. It's a business. (Deadspin)
