Time Changes Everything

40 years ago, the construction of a massive, impossible-to-ignore TV tower in the center of San Francisco was seen as an abomination, an insult, a marring of the skyline, a health hazard. NIMBYs were out in force. Today? Sutro Tower is a popular landmark, so much so that people get tattoos of it and it's an instantly identifiable symbol of The City from countless TV and movie appearances, if not quite on the level of the Golden Gate Bridge. Goes to show that today's architectural and environmental nightmare may be tomorrow's beloved icon. (San Francisco Chronicle)
