Dead: Ralph Wenzel, former Steelers and Chargers guard, at 69. Cause: dementia. He was one of the first former NFL players to note mental deterioration; He'd been a teacher and coach and started experiencing memory lapses and other problems in 1995, leaving him unable to work, and ultimately unable to communicate or feed himself. His wife, a Ph.D. in public health, used her husband as an example of the problem of brain damage attributable to football. And the NFL, faced with mounting evidence, remained in denial until recently. By that time, it was too late to help Wenzel, and it was too late for him to even understand what was going on anymore.
