Although Amtrak's Gotten Way Too Expensive. Take SEPTA And NJTransit Instead
-
Is it really a new thing that travelers in the Northeast take Amtrak instead of planes when commuting from, say, New York to D.C.? It's certainly been like that since 9/11 and the delays for security that make the air shuttles unwieldy, but I was using Amtrak pre-Acela for years when I lived in Philadelphia and New Jersey. The benefit was that you'd go from Center City to smack in the middle of Manhattan or right at the doorstep of Capitol Hill instead of having to make your way from LaGuardia or National downtown. This isn't new. And it has zero application in the rest of the country, where big cities aren't as closely spaced and there's no need for more rail because there isn't a demand. (New York Times)
