There were rumors before Obama's DNC speech that he'd announce the August job figures, taking the moment to bask in good news. He didn't, and we now know why: the economy only added 96,000 jobs for the month, well below what was expected. Whatever the happy face the convention tried to put on the economy, it's still very weak. (New York Times)
