I Threw My High School Yearbooks Away And I Didn't Even Get Insulted In Them
-
It's been 42 years, but this man, dying now of liver disease, is still hurting from what appeared next to his picture and name in his high school yearbook: a homophobic slur, one word, replacing what he'd submitted. What's amazing is that the school, neither at the time nor later, did anything about it. And, today, they'll only swap out the page and won't apologize, even though, as he notes, the thing had to have been deliberate -- they saw it go through the editorial process and several layers of supervision. His daughter (yes, the slur was inaccurate to boot) saw it while flipping through the book and was deeply hurt; the school posted the book pages, including the slur, on the walls at the 40th reunion. Would you let it go or push the issue? (North Shore News, North Vancouver)
