Why government shouldn't get involved in what the market does better: Trenton, New Jersey insisted that it needed a high-end hotel downtown, so it subsidized a Marriott. Now, Marriott is pulling out of the city and taxpayers are on the hook for $1.4 million a year to pay off the costs of building the place. And now, they think, well, maybe a low-end hotel chain would be more appropriate. Turns out -- and I say this having lived and worked in that area -- that nobody wants to stay overnight in downtown Trenton. (AP via Bergen Record)
