Trust But Verify. Aah, Verification's Too Hard, Let's Just Trust

The media can screw up at times, but the BBC, already reeling from the Jimmy Savile scandal, really stepped in it this time, with the Director General, George Entwistle, having to quit after just 54 days on the job because "Newsnight," of which he was Editor-in-Chief, ran a story falsely accusing a politician of pedophilia. They went with the report based on one alleged victim's claims, which he then admitted were faulty, and Entwistle then went on Radio 4 and said he didn't know anything about the investigation OR the subsequent retraction, which, you know, would have been part of his job. That's the world's most famous and respected news department doing something you'd fire people for at a Pennysaver. (BBC)
