Dead: John E. Karlin, at 94. Who? He was, basically, the father of all-digit dialing and the modern push-button keypad phone. He was one of the architects of moving from the old alphanumeric "GReenwood 7-5312" dialing (bonus points for recognizing that number, extra for being able to sing it) to all-numbers, and also helped create the 12-button pad we now take for granted. Yes, someone had to invent that. (New York Times)
