Thought They ENCOURAGED Carpooling
-
A company runs a business where people -- regular old private car owners -- can rent rides around town via an app. It's basically a clearinghouse for carpooling. And the city of Austin is threatening to ticket and impound cars listed on the app, because, it claims, it's an illegal taxi service requiring regulation and licenses. But if the company doesn't hire drivers, doesn't own cars, and just lets car owners and riders make arrangements between themselves, is that something the government should regulate? The company is suing; clearly, it thinks it has the right to do what it's doing. And it probably does. (Courthouse News)
