Doesn't Matter If There's An App For That. It Can Do Anything Anyway

With an eight buck ball lens, a cheap flashlight, some double-sided tape, and some lab slides, scientists made a microscope out of an iPhone 4S and used it to diagnose intestinal worm infections in rural Tanzania. They took stool samples, put them on slides, wrapped them in cellophane, taped them to the lens, and took pictures, and it worked -- it picled up 70% of the samples with infections and 90% with heavy infections. This is actually pretty amazing news for those fighting epidemics in third world countries -- a smartphone can do the job a lab would otherwise be needed to do. (BBC)
