The recent revelation that a pile of fan mail addressed to Taylor Swift ended up unopened and in a dumpster raises the question of how celebrities should deal with fan mail. They can't answer all of it, and someone has to at least check each one, which can be a full-time job. And gifts and other enclosures, especially edible ones, have to be a no-go. But it's interesting that people still send fan mail in an era of Twitter, where you're way more likely to interact with a star. The celebrities I know (geez, that sounds Hollywood-arrogant!) do try to respond to tweets, and even though they can't answer all of them, they can get to some, and do. That's more personal than a form letter, anyway. And if you get followed by a celebrity, it can make you a fan for life. (BBC)
