Don't Tell Popeye

There's a crisis in one American industry, but it's an unusual one: There's a problem with production of corn cob pipes at the one place in the U.S. that makes them, the Missouri Meerschaum Factory in Sikeston, MO. The 2012 drought left them way short of cobs. And now they're vulnerable to Chinese knockoffs. All of this raises the question: People still smoke corn cob pipes? Strangely enough, though, THIS year's corn crop might have a glut that could send corn prices crashing down, and they say that the crop reserves existing right now aren't as low as they'd thought. So, someone send some cobs to Missouri so they can make more pipes, okay? (KSDK-TV/St. Louis; St. Paul Pioneer Press)
