A Big Two Thumbs Up For Him, Two Thumbs Down For Cancer
-
Dead: Roger Ebert, perhaps the most influential film critic in history. He didn't come up with a theory of film like Andrew Sarris, and he wasn't above-it-all like a Pauline Kael. He was more of a people's critic, educated and refined but appreciative of good schlock, respected despite the "thumbs up/down" and competitive banter with the late Gene Siskel. For a lot of people, his word on movies was gospel. (Chicago Sun-Times)
