Huh. Next, You'll Say That Colleges Are Mostly For Education
-
Spelman College, a small Black women's college in Atlanta, has dropped its athletic department. No more teams, no more intercollegiate competition. In place of that, they've installed a wellness program. And before you decry the end of the school's softball and tennis and other programs, the question has to be asked: What was the point of paying $900,000 for all those sports? Is it more important to play meaningless games in a meaningless conference (their old one folded, and they'd have had to find a new conference with more travel) than to offer things like golf, swimming, and tennis in intramural play, athletics the women can take with them for life? And could something like this make sense for a larger school if it's not making money from, say, a big-time football program? (New York Times)
