President Obama is ripping the Senate for rejecting background checks for gun sales. It wasn't just Republicans, either, voting against the laws. It's still unclear whether the proposals would do anything to prevent gun violence, considering how much of it -- including Newtown -- is committed with guns obtained through other means. But on the other hand, requiring background checks wouldn't stop too many people from obtaining guns, so would it have been such a liberty-destroying thing? And this is why I never talked about gun control on the radio: Besides everyone having made up their minds, it's all theater -- the laws wouldn't stop anyone from getting a gun, so a) they're meaningless as a crime-fighting tool, and b) they're meaningless as a Second Amendment incursion. Everyone's upset because upset is their default position. (CNN)
