He was a Holocaust survivor and a real estate developer who became very, very rich. He died last year at the age of 97, and left no will and no survivors. So almost $40 million is just sitting there while everybody tries to figure out what to do. It appears that the money, after paying off estate taxes, will end up just going to the state. In the article, a friend calls him an idiot for not having a will, but if he didn't have a family and didn't care where the money went, why would he even bother with the will? (New York Times)
