Can't Do That Here
-
A reminder of how different politics is in countries other than the U.S.: Things had gotten rocky for Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, so her own party dumped her to avoid catastrophe for their own chances, and installed former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd back into the office. Bam, just like that. She called a leadership vote -- a huge gamble at this stage -- and she lost to the guy she ousted at the head of the Labor Party three years ago. So he goes in, she's out, and Labor hopes that'll prevent what, in present polling, looks like pending armageddon in the parliamentary elections. She's another world leader who was more popular outside her own country -- she got a boost for telling off Tony Abbott on sexism and misogyny, making her a feminist hero for some -- but that didn't help save her job.
