One For The Muggles

The detective novel "The Cuckoo's Calling" has been a huge critical (but not a commercial) success, and people have been wondering who the author, a former military police investigator named Robert Galbraith, is and where he came from. Well, he's not named Robert Galbraith, and he's not a former military police investigator. He's not even a he. Robert Galbraith is really J.K. Rowling writing under a pseudonym. This isn't unheard of - other big-time authors have written under pseudonyms, especially when trying out other genres - but it's interesting that when she wrote a non-Harry Potter novel for adults under her own name, critics didn't like it. When they didn't know it was her, they loved it. (New York Times)
