The Wall Street Journal took a stopwatch to a ballgame -- actually, three games -- and determined that, on average, a three hour baseball game contains 18 minutes of action and a whole lot of standing around. But, as this Deadspin post notes, the point is that the bursts of action follow long stretches of anticipation, and that's the point. I'll refer to you Roger Angell's great baseball books of the '60s and '70s in which he talks about how baseball, unique among the major team sports, has its own time and not a traditional clock, and is special because of that.
