Two studies challenge the claim that men are wired to be promiscuous: One study says that monogamy in primates increases males' chances of siring long-surviving offspring, and the primates behave accordingly. In fact, that is cited as explaining why, despite the assumption that boinking every female in sight would increase a primate's chance of fathering lots of children, they tend to pick one mate. But the other study says balderdash (okay, they don't use that term, but still): They say it's because the female primates, once with a mate, have zero tolerance for any competition, forcing the male to stick with her for life (humans would call this procedure "whipped"). Either way, the natural state tends to be monogamy. So that's no excuse for you. (NBC News)
