Call it a firing, call it a retirement, call it whatever, but Charlie Manuel is out as Phillies manager, and it raises the question of how long you give a guy out of loyalty after winning a title before things get too bad. After 2008, the Phillies kept winning right through 2011, but they're declining rapidly now. Most of it is from horrific talent decisions by the general manager, but Charlie was never a good game manager -- that was never a question -- and his quality was entirely that his players liked him and played well for him. Now, the team's detached, indifferent, swinging at terrible pitches -- he's lost the clubhouse. But could they have waited until the season was over? (Philadelphia Inquirer)
