Tom Was Too Stupid To Know Better. Jerry, On The Other Hand....
-
The debate here is whether, in DVD compilations of classic cartoons, to censor Tom and Jerry cartoons in which they're in blackface. On the one hand, it's flat-out racist. On the other, they're not for kids, they're for people who are into animation history, and the cartoons DO exist and banning art because times and mores change is a bad precedent. On the other other hand, if old cartoons showed YOUR ethnicity as an offensive stereotype, how would YOU want it handled? (Historical note: many Tom and Jerry cartoons had the presence of the only human character, the stereotypical Mammy Two Shows, whose face was never shown (except once). TV versions reanimated her as a white woman) (NBC News)
