The downside to the Internet-fueled revolution that lets people do things like rent out rooms, hire themselves out as handymen, and offer cheaper rides than taxis is that these unlicensed, impromptu businesses not only undercut regular businesses but lead to neighborhood problems, such as in the hipster enclave of Silverlake in L.A., where so many people are offering rooms and apartments to travelers through AirBNB that the neighbors are complaining about parking problems, noise, and traffic generated by the visitors. If you live in a neighborhood zoned residential and your neighbor's got tourists coming in and out, you'll look at something like AirBNB a little more critically than most people. (Los Angeles Times)
