Well, It's An Off Year. You Gotta Find SOME Stories To Make It Interesting

It took a few seconds for every news outlet to declare Chris Christie the winner in New Jersey's gubernatorial race. It wasn't close, despite unions and Democratic/liberal groups nationwide pouring millions of dollars into the effort to try to prevent him from winning re-election in a landslide. It didn't work, and that says a lot about Christie's appeal as well as how people will overlook outside forces trying to influence elections with big money donations when it's their own side doing it, as opposed to the Koch Brothers. But the campaign donation discussion, especially since Citizens United, has consistently been bizarre, because you hear dire warnings about corporations and evil conservatives spending to influence elections while, in reality, you have situations like the gubernatorial election in Virginia, where Democrat Terry McAuliffe outraised and outspent Republican Ken Cuccinelli by a wide margin, with a lot more help from donors from outside the state. You can't have it both ways; it's bad for everyone or it's okay for everyone. (New York Times; Washington Post)
