Can't Do The Right Thing, It's Not Our Policy
-
Why should people ever do the right thing? This guy was homeless, traumatized because he was supposed to be at a business meeting in the Twin Towers on 9/11 and somehow narrowly missed being a victim. And through psychiatric help and medication, he ended up cleaning up and getting help with housing through the county. But then he did something that caught the attention of the media: He found $850 on the street and turned it in to the police. Yes, he was honest when most people in his situation would not have been. And when nobody came forth to claim the money, the city gave it to him, along with a commendation from the City Council. But a bureaucrat at the county saw the coverage and denied him General Assistance and Medicaid benefits because the $850 was "unreported income." The county Director of Human Services said she was "just following the rules." She said she "wouldn’t be doing my job if I made him eligible." No, you'd be being a human. Can't have that in our government. (Bergen Record)
