A study by a behavioral economist at Cornell says that school kids will make much more unhealthy choices in the school cafeteria if they're paying withdebit cards than if they're spending cash. I guess this kind of makes sense, since you're going to spend less if you're restricted by the amount of cash that you have in your wallet then if you're just using a card. But it doesn't explain why the choices involved less healthy foods. If all I had was a few dollars in my pocket, I might still go for the fries instead of the salad. (NPR)
