For Richer, Not Poorer
-
You love schadenfreude? Here you go: A very high-powered real estate couple was a fixture in Manhattan society circles and everything was fine until the market crashed and tool their fortune with it. Now, divorce. Suddenly, when they went from filthy rich to facing angry creditors and $116 million in loans the husband had personally guaranteed, love went right out the window. The wife blamed the husband for everything and accused him of being drunk and hitting her as foreclosure loomed. He claims her father, the extremely powerful real estate magnate Harry Macklowe, conspired to ruin him financially. They've put up their duplex for sale, at a bargain $32.5 million. Finances are often the breaking point for relationships, but this one's at much higher stakes. (New York Times)
