Sports Aren't As Big A Priority As Academics? What's WRONG With Those People?
-
This is a compelling long article in Sports Illustrated about my alma mater, Haverford College, where in 1991-92, the men's basketball team lost. And lost. And lost. They call it The Streak, and it was epic and embarrassing and comes with colorful descriptions of how nerdy and weird Haverford is, and, yes, it was. (Imagine me as a college student in the center of proto-Political Correctness. Yep.) The SI website works poorly -- it takes forever to scroll, it's laid out weirdly -- but the article's worth it. And it asks whether losing can breed long-term character and success, whether these guys would have turned out as close and as successful as adults had they been a merely mediocre team that won a few games.
