For It's Root, Root, Root For The Home Team, And The Yankees, I Guess
-
Coolest thing ever: A while back, there was a map from Facebook showing where people root for particular baseball teams. Now, the New York Times has broken it down by zip codes on an interactive map. You can zoom in and see which teams people root for in any zip code. I live in Los Angeles County, so that's obvious: Dodgers 53%, Angels 11%, the evil Yankees 10%. (I assume I count as "other," one of a handful of Phillies fans in enemy territory.) But you can also see the actual line between Yankees and Red Sox territories, and Yankees and Phillies, and Orioles and Nationals; you can see the pockets of White Sox fans surrounded by Cubs fans; you can see how teams like the Mets and A's dominate no counties, and how the Yankees are, really, America's Team, leading in counties in places like New Mexico as well as their own region. It's fascinating. (Deadspin; New York Times)
