I Blame Bobcat Goldthwait's Talking Horse Movie

Rapidly dying off: horse racing. Last week, it was announced that thoroughbred racing at Fairplex (the L.A. County Fairgrounds in Pomona, CA) will end and its three weeks of racing will be moved to Los Alamitos. Hollywood Park closed a while back. In Southern California, we're down to three -- Los Alamitos, Santa Anita, and Del Mar. New generations aren't into it, and older generations are dying off. It's funny -- I've been to the track over the years, and I grew up watching the trotters at the Meadowlands. But it wouldn't even occur to me to go to Los Alamitos these days, and I live an easy drive from there -- in fact, we regularly go to a deli that's literally a few blocks from the track, yet I've never set foot at the track and have no real desire to do so. Sure, the Triple Crown's still big, but that's really it. So, is it even possible to attract new fans to bet on the races? How would you do it? (Inland Valley Daily Bulletin)
